Film: 'Unveiling of Aberystwyth War Memorial', a film by G. A. Cheetham, (1923)

Black and white silent movie by G. A. Cheetham held by the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales.

Black and white silent movie of the unveiling of the Aberystwyth war memorial on 14 September 1923 and footage of school gymnastics, a 'town v gown' race, and a walking race for boys. This is local newsreel footage filmed by a son of Arthur Cheetham (1864-1936), an entrepreneurial film-maker and cinema proprietor, for use in the family cinemas, particularly the Palladium in Market Street, Aberystwyth. Eight clips from the film are shown here. The first two clips show the unveiling of Aberystwyth war memorial on 14 September 1923. The memorial was built in 1922 to a design by Professor Rutelli of Rome, using stone from Ystrad Meurig Quarry. This film of the unveiling ceremony shows Lord Ystwyth, wearing a top hat, standing on the steps of the memorial. The mayor, Captain Edward Llewellyn, addresses the crowd and unveils the memorial by removing a Union Jack banner, revealing the names of the fallen. Alderman J. Barclay Jenkins, on behalf of Aberystwyth Corporation, presents the mayor with the deed to the memorial. Many wreaths are then laid on the memorial steps. The remaining clips show footage of school gymnastics at Plas Crug, Aberystwyth, a 'town v gown' race, and a walking race for local boys.
